Straszyn

Straszyn is a large village, conveniently situated near the Gdansk ring road. The distance to the centre of Gdansk is about 10 km while the S6 expressway, a part of E-28 international route, also runs nearby. Apart from the beneficial location, Straszyn offers many attractions that make it a good place for a holiday destination, and these include the numerous forests, a picturesque river valley and the plenty of hiking and cycling routes that await you.

Straszyn’s environs are very pleasant and attractive in terms of recreation and relaxation. Especially picturesque is the landscape of the Radunia River, including the confluence of the Motlawa, and which forms a great area to hike in or cycle through. In Straszyn itself, there are many pleasant areas as well as natural monuments. Not far from the village, in fact a few kilometres to the west, is Goszczynskie Lake; while to the south is a golf course in Postolowo. If you fancy some sightseeing, visit the church of St Jacek in Straszyn, built in the late 20th century. Another interesting place to see is the old power generation station on the Radunia River with its historical buildings and machinery. Straszyn is a good option for anyone who wants to explore Gdansk, a fascinating city with a turbulent history, mixed cultural influences, and innumerable historical sights. The village has good links with Gdansk and the whole Tri-city.

GEOGRAPHY

Straszyn lies within the borders of Kashubia Region – a territory known for its beautiful landscapes and rich folklore traditions. Known as the “Polish Switzerland”, the region is abundant with lakes and mildly sloping hills. Straszyn is situated south of Gdansk, some 15 km south of the Baltic coastline, and has a population of about 2,500.

Straszyn has been known since the 14th century. The earliest documents record that Stanislaw Sklodowicz was given these lands in 1321. By the 15th century, it already had 100 inhabitants, although the number did not change significantly during the following centuries. In the early 20th century, the first power plant on the Radunia River was opened nearby. Straszyn became a Polish settlement after World War II.
