The Retman Hotel has a great location within three minutes’ walk of the Old Town Square, in one of the streets between the square and the Vistula River. This is a superb place for those who like the idea of living on a historical street in an ancient building. A mere stroll away, you will find many of the city’s highlights, such as the Town Hall, Copernicus’ House, St. John’s Cathedral, the Leaning Tower and the Museum of Gingerbread. The latter is right next door to the hotel, and gingerbread is, of course, synonymous with Torun.
Located in a 19th-century tenement house, the Retman combines history with the comfort of modern facilities. It offers standard single and double rooms; the predominantly dark-brown wooden furniture is brightened by red carpets, while Internet and television is available in all rooms. Keep in mind that there is no elevator and it is possible you might end up on the top floor. On the ground floor, there is a warmly decorated restaurant which offers a traditional Polish menu, while downstairs in the cellar is a cosy pub with brick walls. The name of the hotel means ‘raftsman’ and is related to the tradition of rafting timber along the Vistula. There is a statue of a raftsman with a violin surrounded by several frogs listening intently to his music in the Old Town Square, commemorating the legendary hero who liberated the city from a plague of frogs with his music.
