Situated in Male Garbary Street, a quiet street between the Old and the New Town of Torun where two of the oldest areas overlap, the Heban Hotel offers a premium location for tourists and all those who appreciate historic surroundings. The major commercial thoroughfare, Szeroka Street, runs close to the hotel.
The main part of the hotel is located in a 17th-century burgher’s house with a black façade, this colour giving the hotel its name – Heban meaning ‘ebony’. The second part of the hotel is housed on the opposite side of the same street, in a newer, 19th-century building. Both of them feature a historic flair and pretty interiors reminiscent of Torun’s past. In the older house, there are remnants of ancient wallpaintings and beam-framed ceilings in some rooms, these rooms being of diverse sizes and shapes and decorated with wallpaper and carpets of various colours. Though the furniture is new, the rooms still give the impression of an old-fashioned apartment, with draped curtains, paintings and well-arranged details. Additionally, the later building is equipped with an elevator. The rooms provide views of either old cobblestone streets and burgher’s houses or quiet courtyards. The older building houses a stylish restaurant where breakfast is served, and while it specialises in Polish cuisine, it extends its repertoire to offer other kinds of meals. In the cellar, there is a room with a billiards table. The hotel received a prize from the president of Torun for the best-adapted building in 2000, and was listed among the “cool hotels” of Poland by a Polish travel publishing house. In one of the buildings, Samuel Bogumil Linde (1771-1847) was born, Polish linguist and author of the first dictionary of the Polish language. Thanks to its location and unique character, this hotel is a favourite among tourists visiting Torun.
