The Halit is situated in the heart of the Tatra countryside and is bang opposite the starting point for the Doliny Kościeliska hike, which takes six hours to reach the mountain's summit. Next to the hotel is an open-air market and the Kirowa River runs alongside the hotel. Halit is on the main road that leads to Zakopane in one direction and Slovakia in the other. A minibus, which leaves around every 15 minutes, will take around 20 minutes to reach Zakopane's city centre.
With its rusty looking tin roof and ramshackle layout, the Halit makes a refreshing change from the many stylized 'Highlander' hotels in Zakopane. The building is over 100 years ago and winding staircases and corridors lead to pine-walled rooms. All have a small shower room, radio and TV, carved wood shelves and are decorated with Highlander photos. Despite the rooms simplicity all carry Halit's eccentric character and none are the same as the hotel has been knocked together from two buildings. One half is livened up with a motley collection of flower oil pictures, while the other has mountain prints and paintings along its hallways. A balcony overlooking the stream is just the spot to relax with a flagon of local brew after a hike. Halit would make the perfect base for holiday and experienced trekkers or anyone wanting a stay in an authentic Highlander Home without any gimmicks.
