Once upon a time, in the early 19th century, there was a charming little village with a cluster of manor houses and stables. Fast forward to 2000 and these rural structures have been lovingly converted into luxurious lodgings for inquisitive travellers. As much as that sounds like a fairytale, it is the true-to-life story of Zagrada Bamberska, located at the crossroads of Koscielna and Sw. Wawrzynca streets. Although close to the tourist hotspots, it feels like a corner of real Poznan.
As historic properties go, this one's really rather chic: hardwood flooring, plush fabrics and concessions to modernity in the form of plasma TVs, coffee/tea making facilities and Wi-Fi Internet access. All of the rooms are softly lit, earthy and individually designed with a generous smattering of antique furniture creating a pleasantly cosy experience. There's a cobble-stoned courtyard, a lush green outdoor patio and two conference rooms in beige-and-brown tones. The split-level restaurant (doubling as a 100-seater conference room) has a large selection of wines and Polish dishes, cool jazz on the stereo, beamed wooden ceiling and a classy and often-changing interior by a local artist, making it a worthy destination in its own right.
