DESTINATION SUMMARY
According to many visitors Krakow is the most magical city in Poland. Each year millions of tourists are enchanted by the beautiful old architecture, magnificent artworks in local museums, old town streets and alleys, centuries old churches, and also, and maybe most of all, by the extraordinary climate of history and old Polish traditions which cast a spell upon every visitor. In 1905 W. Feldman wrote “Whoever wants to learn about Polish soul must search for it in Krakow”. This sentence fully describes Krakow’s role as a gateway to Poland. Although in 1609 Krakow ceased to be the Polish capital, it still remains Poland’s leading cultural and spiritual centre.
In 1978 Krakow architectural and historical conglomeration, including the neighbouring salt mine in Wieliczka, was listed among twelve of the most precious world’s monuments. Many a time Krakow was classified in various world rankings as one of the most beautiful town in the world. Although throughout its history, Krakow suffered from wars, plunders and fires, the town was always reviving and returning to its previous glory. Presently, with the administration undertaking renovation and conservation works at a scale yet unmatched in Poland, Krakow starts to reveals its charms to the fullest. |
