Grand Tour of Romania

Four countries and the best of Eastern Europe in two weeks: Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary. You’ll visit trendy Krakow, fascinating Budapest, feel the magnitude of Spissky Castle, and most of all see the best of Romania, the mysterious and endlessly romantic land of Dracula. Our focus will be on the Transylvania region, but we’ll also stay to see the breathtaking painted monasteries in Bucovina.

Day 1 KRAKOW

Private limousine transfer to your centrally-located hotel.

Evening: In the evening, you’ll meet your tour leader. It will be an occasion to savour a hearty and delicious welcome dinner. Should it be more convenient for you to arrive earlier, we’ll customise the programme for you. Overnight stay in Kraków.

Day 2 ROYAL KRAKOW

Morning: Following breakfast, we’ll explore the Medieval city, in particular the picturesque Barbican Gate, Main Market Square – the largest square in Europe – with the 16th-Century Cloth Hall in its centre, the cobbled streets of the Old Town up the ceremonial route to Wawel Hill with the castle of the Polish monarchs, where we’ll visit the Cathedral and the Royal Apartments.

Midday: The world’s largest wooden altar (carved by Wit Stwosz in 1477-1489) is found in the Church of the Virgin Mary, and we won’t miss this magical place. Free time for shopping or sightseeing on one’s own.

Evening: A tasty dinner in a Jewish-style restaurant. Overnight stay in Krakow.

Day 3 AUSCHWITZ & WIELICZKA

A day devoted to exploration of the Little Poland region.

Morning: We’ll explore Auschwitz, which has become a grim symbol of our civilization. Our tour will include the Holocaust Museum in Auschwitz I, as well as the less frequently visited Auschwitz II - Birkenau, the extermination camp itself.

Afternoon: Wieliczka Salt Mine, an outstanding kingdom of salt which dates back to the 13th Century. This subterranean universe is comprised of over 300 km of galleries hewn in rock and salt deposits.

Evening: After sightseeing, we’ll enjoy dinner 100 metres under the ground, in the Wieliczka restaurant. Overnight stay in Krakow.

Day 4 SLOVAKIAN ATTRACTIONS (LEVOCA & SPISSKY CASTLE)

Morning: You’ll continue across the border into Slovakia to enjoy Levoca, once an important trade centre in Central Europe, and nowadays a charming and quiet town.

Afternoon: The next stop will be Spissky Hrad. The remains of the huge castle dominate the scenery. From the castle, one can in good weather see a breathtaking view of the High Tatra Mountains. We’ll also stop at the small Medieval town of Spisska Kapitula, once the most important religious centre of Slovakia.

Evening: Arrival in Eger, a beautiful Hungarian town famous for wine, thermal baths and splendid Baroque architecture. Eger is also known for its heroic defence of the castle against the Turks in 1552, when two thousand people led by the commander of the castle resisted a Turkish army of 150,000. Both the evening and the following morning will be spent in Eger.

Day 5 EGER, CLUJ-NAPOKA

Morning: A walk in Eger. We’ll see the market square with its two main attractions – the Minorite Church and the Town Hall. You won’t miss the fortress and the wine cellars of the Witch Valley. We especially recommend trying Egri Bikaver (Bull’s Blood Wine).

Afternoon: After exploring the enchanting streets of Eger, we’ll continue to Romania, crossing the border in Borş to spend the night in Cluj-Napoca, the historical capital of Transylvania.

Evening: Dinner and overnight stay in Cluj-Napoka.

Day 6 PAINTED MONASTERIES OF BUCOVINA (VORONET & HUMOR)

Morning: A trip through the northeastern province of Romania, Bucovina. Gentle hills and forests, landscapes dotted with churches and pastel-painted houses are typical for this region. Above all, Bucovina is world-renowned for its gorgeous painted monasteries.

Afternoon: This afternoon, we’ll explore two painted monasteries - Voronet and Humor. They were covered with frescoes in 16th Century and added to UNESCO’s Heritage list in 1993.

Evening: Dinner and accommodation in Gura Humoruloi.

Day 7 BUCOVINA (MOLDOVITA & SUCEAVITA MONASTERIES)

Morning: Excursion to Moldovita, the monastic fortress. The colors of the paintings are vivid and fresh, as if applied by the artist's hand only yesterday. It’ll surely take your breath away.

Afternoon: The last but not the least painted monastery on our list is the one in Sucevita. It’s extremely well-preserved and will surprise you with its large number of scenes and personages.

Evening: Our dinner will be enriched with a folk show. We’ll have the opportunity to hear traditional folk music and watch a dance performance. Overnight stay in Gura Humoruloi.

Day 8 BICAZ GORGE & BRASOV

Morning: After breakfast, you’ll board our coach and head south via the spectacular Bicaz Gorge; with its 980-foot-high walls, this natural miracle is one of the deepest gorges in Europe.

Afternoon: We’ll pass the picturesque Red Lake with its pine trees pointing out of the water. It was formed in the 19th Century when, because of heavy rain, a great quantity of rocks slid and blocked the Bicajel River.

Evening: Arrival in Brasov, where we’ll have dinner and spend the next two nights.

Day 9 DRACULA'S CASTLE

Morning: Brasov’s surroundings abound in highlights. Armed with garlic, we’ll visit Dracula’s Castle in Bran. Even those who aren’t interested in ghosts, zombies and evil spirits will like the castle’s Gothic architecture.

Afternoon: The next destination is Peles Castle in Sinaia. Built in the second half of the 19th Century, it’s said to be one of the most beautiful castles in the world. You’ll spend several hours there before returning to Brasov for the night.

Evening: Stroll along enchanting streets of Brasov, followed by a dinner.

Day 10 TRANSILVANIA HIGHLIGHTS (SIGHISOARA & SIBIU)

Morning: A morning to explore Brasov. Its lazy atmosphere is best represented in its cafés in the fantastically preserved Old Town overlooked by the tall Carpathian mountains. The most famous monuments include Biserica Neagra (the Black Church), a great Gothic basilica used by Transylvanian Germans and the easternmost Gothic church in Europe, along with the local Cloth Hall, Hirscher’s House and the Citadel.

Afternoon: Afterwards, you’ll continue to Sighisoara where Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula, was born, and where you can stroll along the streets of probably the most picturesque Mediaeval town (UNESCO) in the eerie Transylvanian landscape.

Evening: Your next destination will be Sibiu, the 2007 European Capital of Culture, with accommodation at a centrally located hotel.

Day 11 SIBIU

Morning: During the Sibiu walking tour, you’ll visit the Large and Small Squares, the Liar’s Bridge, the beautiful Baroque Brukenthal Palace and the Evangelical Cathedral, which is one of the most impressive buildings in Sibiu.

Afternoon: Departure for Budapest. It’s a long way from Sibiu to the capital of Hungary, but you won’t get bored. We’ll pass the Great Hungarian Plain with traditional Hungarian settlements called Tanya.

Evening: Dinner and an overnight stay in Budapest.

Day 12 BUDAPEST

Morning: A half-day tour of the city including the Houses of Parliament, Buda Castle (residence of Hungarian kings) and St. Stephen's Basilica, the coronation church of Hungarian kings. Unmissable is the Fisherman Bastion, a famous Budapest viewpoint.

Afternoon: Free time for sightseeing on one’s own.

Evening: We meet again after a few hours for dinner, with the opportunity to taste delicious Hungarian cuisine and share our feelings about Budapest.

Day 13 ARTISTIC TOWN OF SZENTENDRE

Morning: A free day in Budapest. This is a great opportunity for shopping or visiting the famous thermal baths of Budapest. We offer an optional voyage along the Danube to beautiful Szentendre.

Afternoon: We’ll get to Szentendre by boat. It’s also called the Artists’ Village and has a distinct Mediterranean character. You’ll find dozens of private galleries and more than a hundred art studios here.

Evening: Return to Budapest for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 14 THE END

Morning: Breakfast. End of the tour. Optional extension of your stay in Budapest or a private trip to Vienna.
