Sowie and Kamienne Mountains

sowie and kamienne mountainsThe oldest part of the Sudety range, the Sowie Mountains, is a vast massif extending 25 km westwards from the Bystrzyca River valley to Srebrna Pass. Wielka Sowa, at 1015 meters, is the highest summit of these picturesque mountains. The region is full of attractive towns, however the biggest draw for most people is a complex of enormous underground objects, which the Third Reich constructed under the code name “Riese” (Giant). Why they were built is still shrouded in mystery, adding to the attraction.

HOW TO GET THERE
Walbrzych in the Lower Silesian Voivodship is the most important city in the region of both the Sowie Mountains and the Kamienne Mountains. The city can be reached by train from Wroclaw, where you will find the nearest international airport (Wroclaw Strachowice), and of course, there is Warsaw too. Getting from Wroclaw to Walbrzych takes just about an hour and a half, while it is an 8-hour journey from Warsaw. Within both regions, the most common mode of travel is by bus.
